HAve you visited la Torre Bellesguard (Bellesguard Tower), officially called Casa Figueras? The tower is located in the luxury neighborhood of Sant Gervasi, at the foot of the Collserola mountain. It is still a private property where still lives the Guilera family. The story goes back to the first decade of the 20th century, when Jaume Figueras, a close friend of Gaudí, asked the modernist architect for an order to erect the tower in that precise place. The tower was built by Antoni Gaudí between 1900 and 1909, it´s built with straight forms, very unusual for his work, inspired by the medieval castle of Martín I el Humano, the last king of the Catalan dynasty of Casal de Barcelona, who lived in Bellesguard until his death in 1410. The Tower unites modernism and Gothic style and restores what remained of the medieval palace, which forms part of the gardens. There are many characters and historical events in Bellesguard that influenced and inspired Gaudí to create one of his most personal, symbolic and fascinating works.
The history of Bellesguard is connected to the history of Catalonia with its origins going back to the Middle Ages, when Martí I el Humano baptized the place, with its current name and decided to build his habitual residence. It was also the place where Serrallonga, one of the most famous bandits of Catalonia, was hiding after going into the city. Also, Torre Bellesguard had a relevant role in the historical events of 1714. Due to its strategic position and its wonderful views, the Tower was named Bellesguard, that in Catalan means "good view" or "good shelter". Bellesguard and the Crypt of Colonia Güell are Gaudí´s works that where he used innovative architectural solutions that he would later use to build Sagrada Familia.
The visiting hours of the Bellesguard Tower during the winter are from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10am to 3pm. Do not miss this opportunity to discover Barcelona, enjoy its summer proposals and get to know the city better with our luxury apartments by BCN Apartment Rentals.
