Madrid is one of the greatest art capitals in the world, and more so during the city’s bustling ARCO Madrid fair. The 36th edition of the festival takes place from February 22nd to 26th.
The world’s best-attended art fair—the event brought 92,000 visitors in 2015—brings the international art world to Madrid’s IFEMA convention center in late February. But Spain’s capital city is also a treasure trove of year-round art riches. Besides three of the world’s best art museums—the Museo del Prado, the Thyssen Collection and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía—Madrid boasts less well-known cultural attractions that put most other global cities to shame.
The International Fair of Contemporary Art, organized by IFEMA, brings together in the 7th and 9th pavilions of IFEMA a total of 200 galleries from 27 countries, of which 164 are part of the General Program, with the following sections: Argentina Platform / ARCO, with a selection of 12 galleries; Dialogues with 12, and Opening with 18.
As another sign of identity, ARCO Madrid stands out again for the commitment of international galleries for the programs focused on individual or dialogue presentations (about 40% of the total), emphasizing the role of the Fair as a space for discovery or rediscovery of artists. In addition, more than a dozen large format pieces will be distributed through the pavilions as Special Projects, which confirms the interest of the galleries to present more ambitious works. International participation remains in the same parameters as in previous editions, with a percentage of foreign galleries accounting for 66.5% of the total. Latin American participation, which accounts for 40% of the international segment, stands out again, with a total of 41 galleries from nine countries, adding Argentina as a guest country, which consolidates ARCO Madrid´s projection as a Latin American reference in Europe.
The new program called "Dialogues", in collaboration with the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for Development (AECID), presents 12 galleries selected by María de Corral, Lorena Martínez de Corral and Catalina Lozano, whose booths will generate new content and presentation of artists like Roman Ondak and Robert Breer, Ariel Schlesinger and Jessica Rankin.
ARCO Madrid, with a budget of 4.5 million euros, allocates about 20% to its international promotion programs and invited buyers and prescribers, bringing to Madrid more than 250 collectors from 44 countries and 150 directors, commissioners of biennials and other international prescribers of the art world, in addition to international promotion initiatives and other direct actions with collectors from the main markets. In addition, ARCO invites again thirty young collectors, who have a program oriented to their style and preferences.
Moreveover, you will see the collectors, patrons and members of museums such as Whitechapel Gallery, Frac Aquitaine, Palais de Tokyo, National Museum of Fine Arts (AAMNBA), Mamco, Jeu de Paume, CAAC Mali, Pompidou Center, Davis Museum of Wellesley College, MALBA, MoMA, MuBE, Musee d´Art Moderne de la Ville Paris, Tate Americas Foundation, Independent Collectors, etc.
