When the summer arrives, the whole Costa Brava moves to the rhythm of havaneres, typical Catalan music with Cuban roots, that can be interpreted as "colonial shanties". Outdoor concerts are held in many towns of the Costa Brava, featuring groups who perform songs that were brought back from the Caribbean in the 19th century and that have become firmly established in popular Catalan culture. The most eagerly awaited performance is, without a doubt, Cantada d´Havaneres in Calella de Palafrugell. This concert, held on the first Saturday in July since 1966, is one of the major tourist events on the Costa Brava. This year, it will be held on July 7, though if you´re not going to be there, you can enjoy other smaller Havaneres Concerts in various towns of the region!

The heart of the night of Cantada d´Havaneres is the cove of Portbò where the stage is set up. Local people bring the boats to the sea shore and enjoy the show from the water as well! You couldn't ask for a better setting, with its picturesque white houses, Calella de Palafrugell retains all the charm of an old fishing village.

If you decide to come, make sure you get here early to avoid parking problems and to get a good vantage point for the concert.
