From May 15 to 31, the municipal markets of Barcelona and the Catalan province will participate for the first year in la Setmana Internacional dels Mercats (The international markets´ week), which aims to promote the local food products. The intention is to bring the centers of commerce, gastronomy and life such as the markets to the young public under the motto "Markets for a new generation". In each of the participating markets you will find many gastronomic and children's activities, musical performances, tapas nights, conferences, photo competitions and cooking shows to raise awareness about healthy habits.
The most famous market is la Boquería, which attracts thousands of tourists every day. However, it is not the only market that is worth visiting. Here is a list of the great and famous gastonomics markets of Barcelona that are worth visiting:
1. MERCAT DE SANTA CATERINA: Re-opened in 2005, this colorful and modern market has market stalls with diferent types of food, as well as some bars and restaurants. You can taste some tapas at "Cuines Santa Caterina" or take away. The treatment is perfect and the tapas are pure luxury. The opening ours are: Monday, from 7.30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, from 7.30 to 15.30. Thursday and Friday, from 7.30 a.m. to 8.30 p.m.
2. THE MERCAT DE GLÒRIES: Opened at the end of 2014, it is a gastronomic space inspired by a traditional market, where you can attend culinary workshops, buy gourmet products or even choose from a variety of restaurants where you can treat yourself to something delicious. The opening hours are: Sunday to Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 00:00 a.m. Friday and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
3. EL NACIONAL: Located in the heart of Paseo de Gracia, although a little hidden from the crowd, is the Nacional, which is a restaurant that simulates a modernist market with a certain air of luxury. The national has several gastronomic spaces differentiated into two types: bar or table. In the bars we can choose between: beers, wine, oysters and cocktails and at tables: La Tapería, La Paradeta, La Lonja and La Brasería.
4. MERCAT DE LA PRINCESA: The Number One Tapas Market in Barcelona par excellence. The place has different stands where you can choose from all kinds of tapas, which makes it a perfect place for groups and foodies. You can go for tapas with friends and discover their sushi, hamburgers, pizzas, sausages, pintxos and etc. The opening hours are: Monday to Thursday from 1 p.m. to 12 p.m., Friday from 1 p.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday from 12:30 a.m. to 0:30 p.m., Sunday from 12:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.
