The Sitges Carnival is known to be one of the greatest festivals, held this year between February 8th and 14th. The Sitges Carnival has over 100 years of history and is one of the most emblematic of the carnivals in Europe. The Sitges Carnival is celebrated the last week before Ash Wednesday. It starts at "Jueves Lardero" or "Fat Thursday" on February 8, this days each and every one of the Spaniards and Catalans enjoy local dishes such as Catalan sausage and potato omelette. In Sitges, this day of gluttony is completed with the celebration of the arrival of the King Carnestoltas. Carnival Sunday ob February 11 is a designated day, since the Rua de la Disbauxa takes place with dozens of floats and thousands of participants in disguise, touring the center of Sitges. On February 13, or Carnival Tuesday, the Rua del Extermini starts, with the same route and with a greater number of visitors. February 14 or Ash Wednesday ends the Sitges Carnival, celebrating the burial of the King Carnestoltes. To mark the end of the carnival, there is also "Burial of the sardine", when a sardine is sown on the beach to symbolize the abstinence of fish and sweets during the next forty days before Easter. At Sitges Carnival, Saturday is the best day to party and Tuesday to enjoy the Defiles.
One of the peculiarities of the Sitges Carnivalis its parade. There are around 44 floats and just over 3000 dance participants. Among the biggest parades you will see the night shows "Rua de la Disbauxa" starting on 8pm on February 11, plus "Rua de l´Extermini" starting on 7:30 pm on February 12. These parades generally start at PI Cap de Vila in Sitges and continue along the maritime road.
One of the most pleasant aspects of the Sitges Carnival is that everyone participates in it. Although there are a good number of young people attending the celebration, they do not have a monopoly on Carnival entertainment. There, you can go to fabulous events for each and every age. To give an example, it is advisable for families to join children´s parade on the last day of the week, February 11 or tge one at 3:00 pm (Rua Infantil) on February 13. Imagine the Carnival parades full of colors, people dressed in incredible costumes, live music in each and every part, dancers, theatrical performances! Undoubtedly there is a wild atmosphere at the Sitges Carnival, and shortly before the main Carnival, the Gay Sitges Carnival takes place 4 days before!
During the Carnival week, the city of Sitges floods with party people.
