From 24th of February to 1st of March 2017, Carnival spirit will be filling the streets of the city. Children´s parades, festivals featuring music and dance from around the world, concerts, and traditional musical ensembles: ´chirigotas´, ´comparsas´ and ´murgas´. These are just some of the activities programmed, based on the key themes of unity and diversity. People in classic costumes, such as medieval ladies, knights, witches or bloodthirsty vampires, dance alongside fun-lovers dressed up as modern-day celebrities or movie heroes to the music of the comic Carnival bands known as ´chirigotas´.
The opening speech on the Plaza de la Villa gets the Carnival festivities going. A popular figure in the capital city declares a few words in front of euphoric audience thirsting for fun. From this moment on, Madrid will live the celebration!
Between the most famous moments, there is The Big Parade, from El Retiro to Cibeles, which involves hundreds of participants dressed up as colourful characters. You´ll find music, fun and good vibes in abundance for adults and kids of all ages throughout the streets of Madrid.
Head to the Círculo de Bellas Artes for this festival of masks that carries the slogan "Carnaval al desnudo" (´Naked Carnival´), a ball that has already become a tradition during Madrid´s Carnival period, along with the costume contest. The places are limited, but if to do it beforehead, anyone can participate! It is held at Salón de Baile de írculo de Bellas Artes, there´s a jury which valores the originality and the details of every costume, and the selected ones will have a fabulous chance to participate in the Carnival ball of masks and outfits. You´ll find Venetian masks and outrageous costumes dancing to the rhythms provided by artists like CF Grand Wizardo, DJ Floro, DJ Tito and DJ Bombín. There will also be a batucada, just like in Brasil, and other carnival music.
The final part of the fiesta is marked with a symblyc burial of the sardine, an old Spanish tradition. As well as a Pyromusical at the Plaza de Cibels, which inivites everyone to celebrate the carnival with the fireworks.
In Madrid you can be who ever you want, whether that means becoming someone else, or letting your inner Loco (crazy) spirit out for everyone to see – at least during the Carnival celebration, which is held from February 24th to March 1st his year. For six days, Madrid is decked out to welcome the king and queen of the festival, Don Carnal and Doña Cuaresma, so make your most original costume and get out to participate in the big plans the capital has got waiting for you.
