Carnival Barcelona 2019
Carnival 2019 arrives in Barcelona!

The Carnival 2019 Barcelona is welcoming the party mood to the city this week! The first written reference to the Carnival in Barcelona dates back to 1333, when the battle of oranges was banned (today it is performed as la "Taronjada") and the use of masks was regulated. The Carnival 2019 is celebrated between February 28 and March 4. The King Carnestoltes debauchery will arrive soon: the Carnival 2019 parades will tour the city on Saturday March 2, and the party will be extended from Fat Thursday until Ash Wednesday. For a perfect accommodation, BCN Apartment Rentals offers you the best luxury apartments in the heart of Barcelona, with the best design, location, security and comfort.
The Dijous Gras (Fat Thursday) is the first day of the Carnival cycle, when the King of the Carnival (Carnestoltes) will make the triumphal entry with the "arrival", the main Carnival activity in the city, which consists of a great party with all the courtship of the King Carnestoltes. This year as always there will be a show based on colors, party and masks, that you can follow throughout the afternoon of February 28 at la Plaza de Sant Jaume. At 5.30 pm the procession will start, and at 6.30 pm the King Carnestoltes will welcome you with his 7 ambassadors that represent a color and a capital sin. When the proclamation of the Carnival ends, the "taronjada" will begin, a fun war of orange balloons and confetti, a crazy activity typical for the Carnival in Barcelona.
On Saturday, March 2m there will be around 30 local processions of Cavalcada del Rei Carnestoltes in all the districts of Barcelona. We recommend seeing the events in the old town of Barcelona. The activities generally focus on civic centers and food markets in each district of Barcelona. During the Carnival of Barcelona you will see many parades, costume contests for adults and children, food and cooking contests. You will get to know the tradition of eating tortillas and the "botifarrada", where everyone eats botifarra, a type of Catalan sausage. In addition to tortillas and botifarra, sardines are one of the main ingredients in the Carnival tradition of Barcelona and there are many sardine tasting events.
According to the tradition, after several days of "sins", the King Carnestoltes is judged on Shrove Tuesday. On Ash Wednesday, the final act of the Carnival of Barcelona is organized, called "The Burial of the Sardine", which serves as a farewell to the King Carnestoltes. Moreover, it traditinally gives a start to the Lent, the period before Easter. Popular events are organized in various neighborhoods of the city and, of course, there the typical sardines will not be lacking!
