Carnival, a festivity based on the lunar calendar and eagerly anticipated by locals and visitors, always begins on a Thursday (Fat Thursday) and ends on the following Wednesday (Ash Wednesday). Carnival is partying, bustling crowds, costumes, parades and so on. It is a week of good time before the period of fasting represented by the Christian tradition of Lent. These days Carnival is a light-hearted popular festival based around the crazy figure named El Rei Carnestoltes (The Carnival King). While Carnival is celebrated in almost every town and village throughout Catalonia and SPain, the places that historically stand out for their particular traditions are Barcelona, Sitges, Vilanova i la Geltrú and Torelló.
The Dijous Gras (Fat Thursday) is the 1st day of Carnival, when the King of the Carnival (Carnestoltes) will make the triumphal "arrival", the main Carnival activity in the city, which consists of a great party with all the courtship of the King Carnestoltes. Wherever you may be during the festivities, you will be able to try some of the delicious traditional Carnival dishes: the coca de llardons (flatbread with pancetta) or botifarra d'ou (pork sausage containing egg).
The Rei Carnestoltesarrives will arrive with his entourage comprising 7 ambassadors who symbolize the seven historical towns within the city (Horta, Sant Andreu, Sarrià, Gràcia, Sants, les Corts and Sant Martí). There are also further parades that take place in different places throughout the city. Carnival is also held in the markets of Barcelona which are full of people with costumes doing tastings. According to the tradition, after several days of "sins", the King Carnestoltes is judged on Shrove Tuesday. On Ash Wednesday, the final act of the Carnival of Barcelona is organized, called "The Burial of the Sardine", which serves as a farewell to the King Carnestoltes. Moreover, it traditinally gives a start to the Lent, the period before Easter. Popular events are organized in various neighborhoods andthe typical sardine tastings will not be lacking!
