"Fat Thursday" is the first day of the Carnival, when Carnestoltes, the King of Carnival makes his triumphant entrance in Barcelona with "l'Arribo" (The Arrival), the central event of the Carnival festivities. This year the King Carnestoltes is Tòtil Tocatdelala, he arrives with a theatre group Comediants, who have prepared a collective show based on colours and masks, you can follow them throughout the afternoon and evening at Plaça Sant Jaume and surrounding areas.
At 5.30pm the King Carnestoltes' Court sets out, including the Prime Minister, the 7 Ambassadors with their attachés, musicians, flag bearers, the Carnival giants Rodanxó and Rodanxona. At 6pm, you can wear your colourful mask that is gaven out in the square, and at 6.30pm welcome the King Carnestoltes and his 7 Ambassadors, each one representing a colour and one of the 7 deadly sins. Once the King Carnestoltes proclaims his reign over the week of abandon, it's time for the "taronjada" (orange fight) and a week of party untill March 6. The Carnival procession will head up La Rambla, dancing their way along with a float decorated with flowers, then it will dance, jump and sing untill reaching the Palau de la Virreina.
