The International Women’s Day or Working Women’s Day is held every year on March 8 and is recognised by the United Nations as a day of protest against sexism and inequality in rights and opportunities between men and women. March 8 dates back to several one-off events: the 1857 North American women textile workers’ strike, the fire at the Cotton factory, and the fire at the North American Triangle Shirtwaist Company in New York on 25th of March 1911, the International Women’s Day originated from the large-scale protests that ensued.
Tomorrow, the Barcelona Womens Council will be joining the International Women’s Day Commission call for a women´s strike. Under the slogan “We're stopping to change it all. Not one step backwards", thousands of women will join a strike called in different countries around the world as a care-work, consumption, production work, education and civil disobedience strike in protest against inequality towards women. There will also be a Women´s March starting at 6.30 pm and going down from Plaza España to Plaza Cataluña. The march will conclude with a manifesto reading and performances by various music and theatre groups.
The metro and bus services will be reduced to 50% of services during the rush hours in the morning and evening and 25% during the rest of the day. Overall, the International Women’s Day manifestations promise to be peaceful so there´s nothing to worry about, just take into account extra time to plan your route around the city.
