Every year we celebrate the traditional "Flower Carpets" that cover the streets of Sitges during the festivity of Corpus Christi. In the contest, the neighbors of the streets participate, 30,000 dozen of carnations are used along with other species of flowers and the grass, always of base, coming from gardens of Sitges, Terramar golf course and "Camp Nou" from Barcelona.
During the same days, the "Contest of Floral Decoration of Facades and Balconies" is celebrated, by the neighbors of the town, using mainly carnations and geraniums, along with other varieties of flowers. Since 1991, the "Sample of Bonsai", presented by "Els amics del Bonsái" in Sitges, a group of fans of this art, have exhibited around 100 specimens.
Residents of Sitges start early in the morning and make lovely patterned street carpets using flowers petals and seeds. The flower carpets are called 'catifes de flors' in Catalan and they cover almost all of the narrow streets of Sitges and some of the plazas. This Sitges event has been declared a Spanish 'Festivity of Internation Touristic Attraction.' Other highlights are the clove fair, called 'mostra de clavells' in Catalan, with over 2000 flower pots and over 100 types of cloves.
Corpus Christi is a Catholic festival to honour the Eucharist. The date of Corpus Christi changes every year and is held 60 days after Easter Sunday.The tradition of carpet flower making is thought to have originated in the middle ages in Spain and the Canary islands for the feast of Corpus Christi, than the decorations and motifs have become more elaborate over time. Floral carpets are also called sawdust carpets and can be found in South America too.
