Gala was born into a family of intellectuals from Kazan and spent her childhood in Moscow. After moving to Switzerland, she met the poet Paul Éluard, moving to Paris with him and subsequently coming into contact with members of the surrealist movement such as Max Ernst, Picasso, Man Ray, Cecil Beaton and Brassaï. In 1929 she travelled to Cadaqués, where she met young Dalí, who she fell in love and started living with. They were exiled for 8 years in the United States, and on their return they lived between Portlligat, New York and Paris.
The exhibition "Gala Salvador Dalí: A One´s Own Room in Púbol" explores this enigmatic and intuitive woman, who had relationships with many artists of that epoch. She was known worldwide for being the wife of Salvador Dalí, his muse and the protagonist of some of his paintings. This exhibition will show you the transformation of Gala into a fully-fledged artist, given that the couple began producing art together, leading to the shared authorship of some works. With this exhibition, the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya and Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí intend to reveal the character of Gala: muse, artist and a key figure in 20th-century art.
Moreover, the "Gala Salvador Dalí" exhibition will also allow us to follow Salvador Dalí’s evolution as a painter and brings together a significant collection of his works, 60 in total, including oil paintings and drawings. The exhibition will also present a selection of paintings, drawings and photographs by other artists who were part of the surrealist scene, such as Max Ernst, Picasso, Man Ray, Cecil Beaton and Brassaï. A big collection of letters, postcards and books will also be displayed for the first time, as well as dresses and objects from Gala’s personal boudoir. In total, the exhibition will present approximately 180 pieces that reconstruct Gala’s complex and fascinating character.
The exhibition will unveil a Gala who camouflaged herself as a muse while forging her own path as an artist: she writes, imagines and creates her own image, in addition to playing an essential role in Dalí’s artistic development.
