The streets, cabarets and cafes of the Montmartre district in Paris were the creative explosion, marked by the bohemian and the avant-garde scene. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and other artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Jean-Louis Forain, T. A. Steinlen, Pierre Bonnard or Édouard Vuillard contributed to theflourishing of a breakthrough movement outside the bourgeoisie. The artworks of Toulouse-Lautrec is instantly recognisable by its strong colour, portrayals of a Parisian lifestyle at the end of the 19th century, and posters advertising everything from recitals to bikes. A debutant of the post-Impressionist movement, he produced hundreds of works before his early death at 36.
The Toulouse-Lautrec exhibition at Caixa Forum Barcelona consists of more than 350 works with international loans from public and private collections. It represents a journey through the centuries-old bohemian Paris and looks back to the artist's years spent in Montmartre, his nocturnal life and relationship with the cabarets and underworld of the French capital, through a series of paintings, posters and other items. This is a multidisciplinary exhibition made to understand the fundamental role that the spirit of Paris and Montmartre had in the development of modern art, and the way in which Toulouse-Lautrec and his contemporaries influenced the evolution of ephemeral artistic production: posters, illustrations, prints and designs, which expanded the bohemian spirit and artistic creations to new audiences.
